Cutting Carbon Emissions by 90% with Plant-Based Cell Cultivation LINK
Green Elephant Biotech uses plant-based PLA, a biodegradable polymer, to replace petroleum plastics in single-use systems, reducing emissions while meeting regulatory and safety standards.
The CellScrew system cuts carbon footprint by up to 90%, utilizing efficient design and additive manufacturing to minimize plastic use and waste in biopharmaceutical applications.
The CellScrew Mini provides affordable early-stage testing, while upcoming automated systems streamline cell therapy manufacturing, reducing labor and energy demands for sustainable industry adoption.
Scientists Identify Bacteria That Degrades PET Plastics in Wastewater LINK
PET plastics pollute the environment for decades, breaking into microplastics that harm ecosystems and human health, comprising half of microplastics found in wastewater globally.
Northwestern researchers discovered that Comamonas bacteria found in urban waterways can break down PET plastics into carbon, offering a natural solution for plastic pollution.
Optimizing these bacteria could lead to scalable, bacteria-based systems for plastic waste cleanup, while reducing single-use plastic reliance remains crucial for long-term sustainability.
Electric Aircraft Startup AMSL Lands $50M and First Flight Success LINK
AMSL Aero's Vertiia, a long-range electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, completed over 50 remote-controlled test flights in NSW, demonstrating emissions-free hydrogen-powered capabilities with a 1,000km range and 300km/h speed.
Vertiia, designed for helipad-sized operations, will serve as an air ambulance, passenger transport (1 pilot + 4 passengers), or freight carrier (500kg). Certification and hydrogen-fueled flight trials are planned by 2025, targeting commercial flights by 2027.
The Sydney-based startup, founded in 2017, has secured over $50 million from investors and government grants, including $5.43 million from Australia’s Renewable Energy Agency, positioning it as a leader in sustainable aviation solutions.
Carbon Capture Reimagined MOF Handles 300°C Emissions LINK
UC Berkeley researchers developed a metal-organic framework (MOF) capable of capturing CO2 from industrial exhaust at temperatures up to 500°C, far surpassing current carbon capture materials.
The MOF uses zinc hydride sites for deep carbon capture, achieving 90% CO2 removal efficiency and enabling rapid reuse through pressure adjustments or vacuum.
The MOF targets CO2-heavy emissions from cement and steel plants, addressing a critical need for scalable, high-temperature carbon capture solutions.
Scientists Advance Fusion Energy with Groundbreaking Magnet Design LINK
Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory built the first quadrant of a powerful magnet for the NSTX-U fusion reactor, essential for advancing nuclear fusion technology.
Unlike fission, fusion mimics the sun's energy process by combining atoms, promising unlimited clean energy without long-term radioactive waste.
While commercial fusion reactors remain distant, NSTX-U's advancements bring the goal of sustainable, limitless energy closer to reality.
