Plastic-Free Plant-Based Food Cling Wrap Created LINK
Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan have developed a new plant-based film made from faba beans that can keep meat and food fresher for longer, potentially replacing plastic wrap.
The biodegradable film is made from faba bean protein and other food-based ingredients, making it safe for the environment. It can be composted, will degrade quickly, and will add nutrients back into the soil.
The film contains antimicrobial agents to prevent spoilage of meat products. Researchers are working to scale up production to make it available as a roll of wrapping film in grocery stores and homes.
Scientists Boost Energy Efficiency and Weather Resistance with Smart New Window Tech LINK
Scientists have developed smart windows inspired by surgical masks, enhancing energy efficiency in buildings.
These windows adjust their transparency to control heat and light entry, optimizing indoor temperatures and reducing energy costs.
The technology also improves weather resistance, offering additional protection against environmental elements.
Novel Process Converts CO2 into Valuable Products LINK
Researchers have developed a more cost-effective method for reusing captured carbon dioxide, aiming to make carbon capture technology more viable.
New nickel-based catalyst and bipolar membrane electrode assembly to extract CO2 from bicarbonates and convert it to CO in a single step, saving about 90% of the energy and 50% of the capital cost of the capture process
Captured carbon monoxide can be turned into plastics, chemicals, and jet fuel, enhancing economic viability.
New Nanoweb Filters Remove 95% of Dyes from Wastewater LINK
Researchers have developed cellulose waste filters to efficiently remove harmful dyes from wastewater.
Using an electrospinning process, they combine nanocellulose with plastic to create a nanoweb that binds and removes up to 95% of dyes.
Further testing is needed to enhance mechanical properties, evaluate biocompatibility, and scale the technology for industrial and medical use.
“Feather to Meat” Project Scales Cultivated Chicken Production LINK
Italy's innovative "Feather to Meat" project is expanding its trials to produce cultivated chicken on a larger scale.
The project aims to develop sustainable meat alternatives by growing chicken cells in controlled environments.
By scaling up, the initiative seeks to validate the commercial viability and environmental benefits of lab-grown chicken.
