New Tech Converts CO2 into Sustainable Fuel for Cargo Ships and Air Travel LINK
Aerleum is developing a technology to capture CO2 directly from the atmosphere and convert it into methanol, a fuel for cargo ships and potentially airplanes, skipping the typical intermediate steps of CO2 processing.
Their process uses a sponge-like material that absorbs CO2, which then reacts with hydrogen to produce methanol, reducing costs and energy use compared to other DAC methods. This innovation avoids the need for compressing and transporting CO2.
Backed by $6 million in seed funding from 360 Capital, HTGF, and others, Aerleum aims to reduce the cost of methanol production to $650 per metric ton within five years, making it competitive with fossil fuels.
Gravity-Powered Solar Panels Offer Water Collection and Cooling, No Electricity Needed LINK
Researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have developed a gravity-powered system that cools solar panels and collects water from the atmosphere without using electricity, reducing costs and improving solar efficiency.
The eco-friendly device utilizes radiative cooling to reflect thermal energy and a special coating to double water collection efficiency. The water can be used for irrigation and cooling, enhancing sustainability in arid regions.
This innovation, requiring minimal maintenance, offers environmental and economic benefits, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy goals, and could play a key role in shaping a sustainable future.
Breakthrough Bacteria from Mussels Degrades Plastics Faster Than Ever LINK
Rice University scientists have engineered bacteria using mussel-inspired adhesive power combined with enzymes that break down harmful plastics, offering a new tool to tackle plastic pollution efficiently.
Their bacteria, enhanced with the natural amino acid DOPA, showed a 400-fold increase in adhesion to PET plastics, leading to significant degradation overnight, potentially accelerating plastic recycling processes globally.
This innovation also combats biofouling on surfaces like ship hulls and medical devices, offering solutions to prevent microorganism accumulation, with applications extending to tissue engineering and drug delivery.
Cement Decarbonization Tech Cuts Emissions by 98% While Generating Hydrogen LINK
Researchers at UCLA have developed a process called ZeroCAL to eliminate up to 98% of CO2 emissions in cement production by using calcium hydroxide instead of limestone, emitting only water when heated.
The ZeroCAL method dissolves limestone, separates the calcium, and uses electrochemistry to produce calcium hydroxide, while creating hydrogen gas as a byproduct, which can power cement kilns, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
ZeroCAL can be easily integrated into existing cement plants, and a demonstration project is planned with Ultratech Cement in India, aiming to produce lime with near-zero emissions.
UK’s First Direct Air Capture Tech Reaches Canada LINK
UK startup Mission Zero Technologies (MZT) is delivering its third direct air capture (DAC) system to partner Deep Sky’s carbon removal center in Alberta, Canada. The plant will use solar power to capture and store up to 250 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Deep Sky plans to scale from pilot to full operation, aiming to remove between 100,000 and 1 million tonnes of CO2 each year. MZT’s modular system leverages mature technologies and scalable supply chains, enabling rapid deployment within just 12 months.
This installation, the first to operate in sub-zero temperatures, adds valuable real-world data, reducing costs by over 60% compared to MZT’s first deployment, and is key to proving the commercial viability of DAC technology.
